There are a lot of traditions that make old fashioned grandmothers a lot of fun to have around. These are habits some of which may appear peculiar or jocular, but they could be due to love, care and years of experience. Nearly every family has a granny who does things her own way. Her ways can warm, secure, and life-filled the home. A funny thing about me is that I save nearly everything. An old fashioned granny is not one that throws away things that are useful. She stores jars, boxes, bags, buttons, ribbons and used containers.

She thinks that each item could be required at some point in time. She might have her own little bits in her cupboards that are not remembered by others. She can always find everything, even when the rest of the family can’t find anything. The other common habit is providing food at any time. After dinner a grandmother might believe that everybody is hungry. She persistently encourages relatives to put more food into their mouths. She might be concerned if a person eats just a small amount. For her, food is an expression of love.
Old fashioned grandmothers love to talk about the weather as much. They observe the weather conditions: heat, cold, wind, rain and clouds. They tend to look up in the sky multiple times throughout the day. They are affected by the weather because it can have an impact on their clothing, health, travel and work. Any temperature change, no matter how slight, can be a major issue. Many grandmothers have an excellent habit of getting up very early. They tend to get up early in the morning.

A second peculiar practice is the cleanliness of special rooms and items for the guests. There are some things too good to use every day! Some plates, cups, covers and clothes can be safe for years. The grandmother desires that they be flawless. Visitors can fail to show up, but all must be in order. Grandmothers also have the concern of health in a caring manner. They pay attention to each cough, sneeze and lazy face. They could offer immediate advice to rest, warmth or basic self care.

Other elderly grandmothers might not understand the modern technology either. They tend to stick with simple and familiar ways of doing things. New devices, apps and buttons may appear redundant. However, they may be curious and willing to learn, particularly if they want to be able to keep up with their family. These funny habits make grandmothers special. They can save too much, worry too much, cook too much, and talk too much, but they can love too much. Over time, these little things turn into happy memories which are all missed and recalled with a smile.
