After the age of 60, many women will find their skin is dry. Skin might be rough, tight, itchy or uncomfortable. May also appear dull or flaky. It’s a normal aspect of getting older. This occurs due to the fact that the skin ages with age and it is unable to retain water as it once did. Natural oils are present in the skin which helps to keep it soft and moist. Elderly women produce less of these oils in their skin as they get older. There is less oil, water gets out easier. This causes the outer layer of the skin to become dry.
Dry After 60
The skin also gets thinner after the age of 60. Thin skin will have a lower protective barrier. This barrier is supposed to retain moisture in the body and keep it safe from heat, cold, wind and other environmental factors. When the barrier is weakened, the skin’s water loss increases and the skin is more easily irritated. Once women enter menopause, her body produces significantly less estrogen. Estrogen is responsible for keeping the skin thick, soft, and moist. The skin may also lose some firmness and may be more sensitive.
As people get older they have less active oil and sweat glands. Sweat cools the body and provides a little moisture to the skin. A natural oil will prevent water from escaping from the skin. If the glands don’t function as much, there is more dryness, particularly on the arms, legs, hands, and feet. Dry skin can be exacerbated by daily habits. Taking long baths, hot water, and strong soaps will strip away natural oils from the skin. Dryness and irritation can also occur from products containing alcohol or perfume.

Excessive bathing can lead to the disruption of the skin barrier. Gentle care is crucial as older skin is more delicate. The weather can also impact skin. Moisture can be lost from the skin by cold, dry air, strong wind, indoor heating and air conditioning. Excessive sunlight exposure can cause skin damage over the course of many years. Sun damage can cause the skin to become dry, thin, rough and weak. Dryness can be exacerbated by some health conditions. When dry skin is troublesome or persistent, a doctor can determine the cause.

Women who are more than 60 can get rid of dry skin if they use warm water instead of hot water. Use a mild, non-fragrance soap rather than a strong soap. Moisturizer should be applied to skin immediately following bathing. Dry skin is not something that should be ignored when it is very itchy, painful, cracked, red, swollen or sore. Broken skin can allow germs to enter and cause infection. Aging skin can be made softer, calmer and more comfortable with gentle daily care and the proper treatments.
