Being a grandmother can entice love, joy, and a sense of family. A lot of women enjoy taking on this new role. But at this stage of life, there are also potential struggles you may not realize. It is not always obvious or apparent to the outside world what the fight is. A grandmother can look happy, look after everybody and feel tired, stressed or lonely within. The constant need to be available can be one of the challenges. She might be afraid of looking selfish and uncaring if she sets limits. This pressure can rob her of her time, rest and freedom.
After Becoming Grandmothers
A lot of grandmothers also experience physical fatigue. As the women age, they may become less energetic. They also can experience health issues, pain in their bodies, or sleep disturbances. If a grandmother wishes to participate, her physical ability may not be as great as it was in the past. One of the other sub-stories is the loss of identity. A woman might feel that she is seen as nothing more than a grandmother these days. Her needs, interests and goals might be less attended.
Grandmothers can experience emotional distress as well. May feel as though they are not included in family decisions. Advice may not be followed due to shifting concepts of parenting. They may be upset if their children do not appreciate their experience. Meanwhile, they could be silent in order not to cause conflict in the family. Some of these grandmothers spend some of their meager funds on the upkeep of their children and grandchildren. They can purchase goods, food, gifts, and more. This can be challenging particularly after retirement.

The grandmother might have a lot of family around her but still feel lonely. She might miss her former life, her lover, her friends, or her freedom. She may not feel comfortable expressing these feelings as people would expect her to be grateful and happy. An older woman can have a different set of values than her grown children regarding rules and discipline, or family decisions. She might be afraid to open up if she speaks with her grandchildren, because she could lose contact with them. This fear may lead to stress and sadness.

Grandmothers require care, too! They require rest, respect, personal space and emotional support. A grandmother should be able to have a healthy and independent relationship with her grand-children. Awareness of these hidden struggles can help families to be more loving and caring. Grandmotherhood should offer love and connection, but it should also provide a place where women can live with dignity, choice and peace.
