A Senior Lady Discusses 20 Simple Ways To Stay Independent As You Age

As a grandma, I felt none old when I was young. I was always very busy with my family, my children, my home and my work. Life went on and so did I. My attitude about being older at the time wasn’t given much consideration. Now in my 80s, though, I know lots of things about old age. I have no complaints about getting old, but I also have a requirement to be independent! Our body changes as we age. We may not walk as fast as before.

Ways To Stay Independent

One easy way to maintain independence is to get around. Avoid to sit for the entire day. Moderate exercising is beneficial for the body. Maintains the action of the legs and arms. It may also give us a sense of freshness! We don’t have to work very hard. Older people may be able to manage gentle movement. I’ve learned that food is important to the body as I’ve gotten older. Simple and healthy food can make us feel good. If our body feels better, it will be easier for us to take care of our day to day needs.

I feel it’s crucial to keep the home safe, too. As we age, we should make our home easy to move around in. Things that we use often should be easy to reach. Floors should be free of clutter and there should be adequate lighting in the rooms. A safe home can make an older woman feel more at ease and independent. Keeping up to date on the things around me is something interesting that I love. Small learning and a daily routine can make the mind feel more active. It also provides meaning to the day.

Another one of the things that I’ve learned is, you don’t have to be afraid to ask for help. Independent does not equal independent of others. We sometimes need help! Seeking assistance when we need it can increase our independence. It protects us, keeps us safe and doesn’t make us too tired. I also make an effort to personalize things and make daily choices. I get confident because I make my own choices.
