At a meetup, an aged lady came to speak with us. In her 90s, she wished to share with him how her body has changed. She urged us to write a simple blog so that other old people and their families, who might not understand these changes, would know. While aches and pains may become a way of life, care, patience and support can help make life easier. The old woman told her that she feels stiff in her body when she gets up in the morning. She might complain about her joints and muscles being painful prior to moving. She states that it now takes longer to get up out of bed.
Aches and Pains
She also shared that it took more effort for her to walk. Her legs may be weak and her knees may ache. Her balance is not always good, she says. This is what makes her attentive to each and every step. She explained how a safe and clear home can help keep an older person from being afraid and to help them move around more confidently. The old woman complains of pain in her hands which hinders her activities. Her fingers might be stiff and tired, and so may be her hands. She is not as agile as before when holding or moving objects.
She announced that pain can also disrupt sleep. It may be difficult to find a comfortable position. She may get up during the night and feel tired in the morning. The lack of sleep can make pain and weakness seem more intense, she says. She spoke of the necessity of ample rest, and also of giving the body a gentle activity during the day. The lady also spoke about fatigue. Everyday chores can consume a lot of her energy, she says. Personal care, feeding and mobility may be delayed.

She admitted that short breaks have become an integral part of her life. Rest is not her weakness, she doesn’t believe that. Rest is how she says that she’s protecting her strength. Family members should take the time to hear what an older person has to say about feeling pain, she says. Aging should not be used as an excuse not to be in pain. The old woman spoke about the need for routine health visits and treatment. She explained that softness, the right kind of food, plenty of water, rest and loving support can enhance the comfort level for every day.

At the end of the meetup, the aged lady asked us to share her message. Respect, choice and independence are still desired by people in their 90s, she says. They may be moving slowly and in pain, but that does not mean that their feelings and needs are not important. She talked about the importance of patience and kindness. We created this blog to assist others in comprehending that with thoughtful care, old age can be safe, calm and dignified. Her message was to remind us that all the elderly people should be taken care of.
