Most of them make a meager living. They might receive a pension or money from their savings or family. This is not a sufficient amount to support rent, food, medicines and other living expenses. One of their foremost concerns is housing. Monthly rent payments can be a significant portion of their income. When rents rise, older women may find that they have hardly any money left. They might have difficulty purchasing nutritious foods or paying their medical expenses.
Housing Difficulties
There are some older women who reside in outdated or inadequate housing. Roof leaks, damage to walls, or poor functioning of the heating system are possible. There may also be unsafe stairs, dark rooms, or broken floors in the home. These problems can be life-threatening for women with weak bones, poor vision or walking difficulties. Not being able to afford repairs is a problem for many low income older women. Landlords might also be slow to correct severe issues.
The women may not feel comfortable complaining because of the fear of losing their homes. They may be silent and live in unsafe situations. This can be detrimental to their health both physically and mentally. Housing issues can be even more problematic when one is living alone. If the older woman is older, she may not have someone nearby to help with small fixes, shopping or cleaning. She is likely to feel alone and unsafe, particularly at night. Should she fall ill or fall down she may take a long time before someone notices.

Low cost housing may have extended waiting lists. Homes may be quite distant from hospitals, shops, and public transportation. This increases the difficulties for elderly women who don’t drive. These can be out of medical appointments or struggle to obtain food and medication. Additionally, changing locations can be hurtful. Elderly females could have resided in the same house for numerous years. Their house could have significant memories and bring a sense of comfort. It can leave them sad, fearful and confused.

Some elderly women are relying on family members for housing. This can lead them to feel they’ve given up their liberty. May have limited privacy and limited autonomy in making their choices. They may also feel they are over burdening the family or adding costs to the family as well. Issues of low-income older women’s housing needs must not be overlooked. Their needs are for support, respect, and fair housing choices. A safe house can decrease fear and better health.
