Martha was an old woman who lived in a quiet house at the end of the street. She was old, her house was old, but warm. She rose early in the mornings each day. She blinked and turned her gaze to the ceiling for a second. Her body was heavy and her knees ached to move. But, she smiled with a quietness for she had witnessed another morning. She sat on the side of her bed, taking her time. She used to be able to get up really early one day before breakfast and do a lot of things.
Elderly Woman Sayings
However, patience was required for each individual task now. Martha, however, had learned the art of not being at odds with time. She went about at a leisurely pace and embraced every moment. She looked on her face in the mirror and noticed there were lines on her face. She had light hair, which was white. She had wrinkled hands, and soft, flabby skin. In the beginning it was weird because of old age. She wasn’t the young lady she used to be. Now, however, she knew that each of her brow lines was a memory.
Martha was spending the majority of her day by herself. She had grown children and a full life to herself. As much as they could, they called her, and she was grateful for their voices. The house was sometimes too quiet, however. She did not hear the cajoling of little feet, the family discussions, nor the early mornings. Being quiet was not always a breeze, but it did allow her time to think. She sat by the window, watching the people walk by, a lot of the time. Young moms walked quickly. She had an idea that they were living the hectic part of life.

She had lived a life like that. She had cooked meals, raised children, worried at night and smiled through tired days. Martha learned many things from old age. It gave her the knowledge that health is a wonderful blessing. It gave her the lesson that money is less significant than love. It showed her that little kindness will remain in the heart for years to come. She didn’t want anything great anymore. There were days that were difficult. Her body ached more, and her memory was weak. Often she would lose her way, forget to put things away.

She reminded herself that she had been a person who cared for others all her life and now it was okay to seek care as well. Martha prayed out loud quietly in the evening, while the light was beginning to wane. She didn’t believe in only old age as being sad. She felt it was a slow path with memories. She was lacking quite a bit, but she had gained insight. Old age was gentle, painful, quiet and beautiful through Martha’s eyes. It was a time to remember and to forgive and to rest and to love life in a gentler way.
