Grandma Rosie was an elderly lady now, but her heart was youthful yet. Her hair had gone white, her hands wrinkled, her movements were slow. But there was a sparkle in her eyes. She enjoyed sitting by the window each evening and watching the happenings outside. She would not take off her shawl nor would her head ever bow down as that of a queen’s. Grandma Rosie gave an eyebrow to them and smirked. She knew there was something interesting for them to look forward to.
Childhood Memories
She reported to them about the little village she came from. As a little girl she was fascinated with running outdoors. She would go up the tree and play in open fields and would return with dusty feet. Grandma Rosie didn’t sit still for long, her mom was often upset. From an early age she was a bold girl. She enjoyed working on her own. She tried to do things if she was told she couldn’t. Her youth was far from idyllic. Her family did not have many riches.
Grandma wasn’t poor in her heart though. She was happy with the little things. School was away from home. She loved the smell of fresh bread, the sound of rain on the roof and the warm light of the morning sun. Everyday she walked a very long distance. Often the ground was wet and sometimes the sun was too warm. Nevertheless, her face was proud. She enjoyed her education, but she enjoyed talking too much as well. Her teachers often became tired of her clever answers.

At the time she was a tart-tongued and courageous smile. With the passing of the years, life changed as Grandma Rosie got older. She was married, and had children and grew older to be a grandmother. She had lost many of those whom she loved. Many of her childhood landmarks had changed, too. The quiet village streets were now in chaos, the small fields had grown and the streets were busier than ever. Yet her recollections remained in her heart. As she was telling her story, Grandma’s face relaxed.

Overall, shad lived through hard times and happy times. There had been a lot of changes in her life. She was an old woman, but her spirit was not gone. It wasn’t just an old lady sitting at the window. She was once a little girl with dusty feet and bright eyes, and a strong heart. At that night Grandma Rosie smiled once again. Although her body was old, her memory was young. Her childhood remained within her, full of colour, love and sass.
